What's a clean solution/library that allows initial server side rendering but cleanly updating html in conjunction with ajax?

I'm implementing a pretty standard client-server architecture. My server renders html, client retrieves html.

However, I'd like to have a structured data format in json. I can embed json into the html but I was curious as to whether theres a more elegant solution to this.
