How to keep values of output field not cleared on a click on a submit button in Javascript?

I'm working on a script that takes values from html fields then on a button click performs calculations and display it on output field. The button type is submit. When I click the button calculations are performed and the value of the output field appears for a second and then disappears. I don't want to change the type of the button from submit to button because I need the values to be cleared after button click except for the output field value I need it t be displayed.
