I just downloaded Node.js and i don't understand how it works

I just downloaded Node.js, and I don't understand it. I went on nodeschool and tried to use the first javascripting nmp, but it didn't work. I tried a few other things as simple as a console.log("hello world"); and when I try to have node call the file it gives me ... and won't work. Its driving me crazy. Is my node.js just not working or is it me?
